The psychological supernatural thriller Mala officially hit Video on Demand (VOD) and streaming platforms on July 10, 2026. Directed by Trishul Thejasvi and written by Nisha Sabharwal, the film takes horror fans on an eerie journey through South Asian mythology and dark rituals.
At the heart of the film’s enigmatic island community is Hameed, the local “medicine man,” played by veteran action actor Raw Leiba (Conan the Barbarian, Any Given Sunday). Known for his intense physicality and commanding screen presence, Leiba takes on a more grounded, soulful, and culturally resonant role in Mala, acting as a crucial narrative bridge for the audience.
The Plot: A Tropical Nightmare Inherited
Mala centers on Reema (Indigo Sabharwal), a young woman who unexpectedly inherits an abandoned resort on a secluded tropical island. Eager to unravel her family’s mysterious past and investigate her aunt’s untimely death, Reema travels to the remote property with a group of friends.
Instead of finding simple answers, they are thrust into an unsettling world dominated by:
* Enigmatic and secretive locals
* Peculiar, ancient rituals
* Sinister omens tied to ancient
* South Asian tantric magic
The film utilizes its gorgeous, isolated backdrop—filmed entirely along the coastline of Casey Key, Florida (at the Casey Key Resort)—to cultivate a slow-burning psychological tension where tropical beauty sharply contrasts with creeping dread.
Raw Leiba as Hameed: Beyond the Physicality
For Raw Leiba, stepping into the shoes of Hameed allowed him to deviate from standard action fare and explore a deeply introspective character. Speaking at a New York Comic Con panel—which made history as the convention’s first-ever Indian-themed panel—Leiba revealed how profoundly the script impacted him.
“When I read the script, my character Hameed, it made me just intrigued and dig a little bit deeper within my soul,” Leiba shared. “And I thought, that’s what makes a good script… when you can just dig a little bit deeper within and give it your all.”
Rather than just playing a typical mysterious islander, Leiba viewed Hameed as an essential guide. The character serves as a vehicle for both the characters in the movie and the audience at home to explore the complexities and darker, occult corners of South Asian folklore.
Leiba admitted that the role sparked a massive personal curiosity, driving him to research and learn more about the culture. He notes that this constant “learning curve” is what he loves most about acting, and he hopes Mala inspires a broader, more nuanced cultural dialogue among viewers
A Colorful Contrast
While the final cut of Mala boasts vibrant, lush tropical imagery, Leiba recalled that the actual shoot was a masterclass in pushing through tough conditions. Filmed in Northern Florida during an uncharacteristically brutal winter cold snap, the cast had to simulate sweltering island isolation while dealing with freezing temperatures and rare regional snow.
Despite the harsh weather, the ensemble cast—which also features Priya Deva, Gisele George, Nikhil Kamkolkar, and Nirvan Patnaik—managed to pull off a cohesive, atmospheric thriller that built significant momentum on the festival circuit (including selections at the Gasparilla and Sarasota Film Festivals) before its July 10th release.
Mala is distributed by Buffalo 8 and is available to rent or purchase on Fandango at Home (Vudu), Amazon, and other major streaming storefronts such as Amazon Prime.
